5 Tips for Men’s Health Month

Just in time for Men’s Health Month and Father’s Day, here are five tips to improve physical and emotional wellness for men of all ages. Women can take advantage of this advice too!

Get quality sleep. Adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep. To improve sleep patterns, establish a daily sleep routine: wind down and wake up at the same time each day, ensure the bedroom is quiet, dark, and comfortable, and avoid heavy meals before bed.

Manage stress with self-care. There are many ways to reduce stress and prevent burnout. Avoiding drugs and alcohol, building a support system, connecting socially, eating a balanced diet, staying active and making time for relaxation are all important for both physical and emotional well-being.

Get screened. To lower risk of cancer, men should get yearly screenings, especially those who are 50 and older. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., but fewer than 15% of men use sunscreen regularly. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single day for protection.

Get checked. Men 25 and older should get their blood cholesterol checked regularly. Knowing other personal biometric numbers such as BMI, blood pressure and blood glucose is also important for recognizing health risks.

Talk it out. Men often feel pressure to appear strong and in control of their emotions. But everyone experiences stress, anxiety, depression, sadness or anger at times. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone to process emotions and concerns.
