5 Tips to Manage Stress
  1. Focus on the breath – Breathing deeply from the diaphragm helps bring fresh oxygen to the blood and brain, which helps you relax almost instantly. Breathe in through your nose to the count of four. Hold your breath to the count of seven. Slowly exhale through your mouth to the count of eight. Repeat.
  1. Visualize a relaxing scenario – Imagine you are in a hot shower and a wave of relaxation is washing stress down the drain.
  1. Try a mini self-massage – Massage the palm of your hand in a circular motion using your thumb.
  1. Write it down – Writing provides perspective. List the stressors that you may be able to change on the left, and ones you can’t on the right. Go down the list of stressors that you can change and come up with a few ways you can eliminate or change your perspective on those stressors.
  1. Smile – Smiling transmits nerve impulses from the facial muscles to the limbic system, igniting a calming effect in the body.
