8 Stress-Busting Tips for the Holiday Season

There is plenty of stress to deal with already during the holidays, but add cooking, shopping, wrapping presents, relatives visiting and decorating the house, and it’s a recipe for disaster. Luckily, there are simple ways to handle the onslaught of holiday responsibilities. Follow these 8 tips to stress less and enjoy the holidays.

Don’t put life on hold. Added holiday stressors can push some people over the edge. Maintain regular meals, exercise, and sleep routines to ensure strength of body and mind throughout the season.

Streamline holiday meals. When cooking at home, plan ahead with an easy-to-execute menu, some eager sous chefs, and a kitchen stocked with everything needed to pull off a social gathering. Guests are always willing to bring appetizers, desserts, drinks and other holiday favorites, so let them! Also, a themed potluck is never a bad idea.

Go with the flow. Cancelled flights, bad traffic, lost luggage, burnt cookies and sold-out gifts are the kinds of unexpected frustrations that can lead to a holiday meltdown. When inevitable setbacks occur, try taking a deep breath (or two), accept the things beyond personal control, and adapt and adjust as necessary.

Avoid family conflict. Some people might hardly talk to or see family members except during the holidays, so when gatherings occur, keep the atmosphere positive and loving. Wait until after the holidays to address old grievances or discuss controversial topics, and contact ACI’s EAP for clinical support with family issues, grief, and conflict resolution.

Be realistic about spending. Try not to the let the “spirit of giving” lead to insurmountable debt. Read this blog from Alexander & Associates for tips on managing holiday finances.

Find alternative holiday activities. Build snowmen with the kids instead of going to the movies or a theme park. Have a craft day to make handmade cards and ornaments or bake goodies for neighbors and friends. Remember, it’s the thought, effort and time spent together, not the extravagance of the activity, that counts.

Stay healthy. Rest often. Take a day off if necessary. Get a flu shot and plenty of sleep. End colds quickly with vitamins, lots of liquid, and a visit to the doctor if necessary to feel relaxed, well, and ready for holiday festivities.

Have fun! With proper planning and a little bit of luck, the holidays don’t have to be a drag. Don’t let stress take over this time for enjoying loved ones, celebrating, and taking a break from normal routines. Slow down and appreciate the season.
