Fats are a small, but essential part of a heart healthy diet. The key is choosing the right kinds of fat. Here is what you should know:

 

 

 

 LIMIT

Saturated Fats

  • Animal products: beef, cream, butter, cheese, and  whole or reduced-fat dairy
  • Baked goods: cakes, pie crust, pizza, cookies, crackers
  • Fried foods: doughnuts, chicken fingers, potato chips
  • Oils  like palm, palm kernel, or coconut oil
Trans Fats (hydrogenated oils)

  •  Fried foods
  •  Baked goods

 INCLUDE

Polyunsaturated fats

  • Oils like soybean, corn, or sunflower oil
  • Fatty fish: salmon, mackerel, herring, trout
  • Some nuts and seeds: walnuts, sunflower seeds
  • Tofu and soybeans
Monounsaturated fats

  • Oils like olive, canola, peanut, safflower, or sesame oil
  • Avocados
  • Peanut butter
  • Nuts and seeds
