Fruits and Veggies: Canned, Fresh or Frozen?

It’s important to eat 3-5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily for a well-balanced diet, but how do you decide on which ones to buy? The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says no matter what form you consume, fruits and veggies are good for you!” Here are some things to take into consideration when buying fruits and vegetables:

Frozen- Choose plain vegetables, those without sauces, and low-sodium to avoid unnecessary calories. When buying frozen fruits, look for unsweetened varieties!

Canned- Avoid added sugars and fruit packed in syrup when purchasing canned fruits. Pick the fruits that say ‘packed in its own juices’ or ‘packed in fruit juice’ on the label. For canned vegetables, it’s important to read the label for sodium content. You can buy low-sodium vegetables or just rinse canned vegetables under running water to get rid of excess sodium!

Fresh- Consume fresh fruits and vegetables soon after purchase date because the nutritional value and freshness begins to decline.
