Halt the Salt!

Although it is generally known that consuming excess sodium can increase health risks such as high blood pressure, stroke and kidney disease, the average American consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium per day, which is more than twice the amount recommended by the American Heart Association to maintain heart health. High amounts of sodium are typically found in processed foods, deli meat, canned foods and even sauces. In addition, salt is often added to food to enhance its flavor. Try some of these alternatives to salt as flavoring for meals!
