Holidays Away from Home: The Do’s and Don’ts

For anyone living far away from home, the holidays can be a tricky time. Traveling is often expensive and inconvenient, and staying put can be depressing. But it doesn’t have to be! When spending the holidays away from family and loved ones, it’s the “little things” that separate a dull holiday from a fulfilling one. Review these do’s and don’ts to avoid a case of the holiday blues.

DO Contact Loved Ones

Keeping in touch and hearing the voices of friends and family during the holidays will help ease homesickness. Anything from a few text messages throughout the day to a video chat session can go a long way in brightening the holiday season.

DON’T Avoid Socializing

Make sure to go out at least once or twice during holidays spent away from home. If the thought of seeing other families together leads to sadness, remember that holiday gatherings often include other solo partygoers that would love someone to talk to. Another option is to consider planning a dinner with friends and neighbors to create joy during the holiday season.

DO Something for Others

The holidays are really about giving. Time spent away from family can make people realize that true happiness comes from seeing others happy. Spread some holiday cheer by participating in local charity work or volunteering. This is a great way to meet new people, make others happy and feel good by doing good.

DON’T Overwork

Being far away from family and friends doesn’t mean that this time of year should be spent on the job. Don’t make the mistake of compensating loneliness with more work or else the holiday season may pass by unnoticed. Instead, ease up on work and fill free time with enjoyable activities or relaxation.

DO Enjoy Yourself

Cook a nice meal, go to the movies or try something new. The holidays are a chance to indulge and rejuvenate before a new year arrives.
