Promoting Men’s Health Awareness

A proactive approach to health is the best way to thrive through every decade. Regular check-ups and age-appropriate screenings can improve men’s health and reduce risk of disease. To support Men’s Health Month, here is a list of seven common conditions every man should get screened for:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA): Men between the ages of 65 and 75 that are or were smokers should get screened once for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
  • Colon Cancer: Men should begin screening tests for colorectal cancer at age 50. Those with a family history of colon cancer may need to be screened earlier. A doctor can help decide which of several different tests to detect this cancer is appropriate.
  • Depression: Emotional health is just as important as physical health. Men who have felt down, sad or hopeless in the last two weeks, or who take little interest or pleasure in things they usually enjoy, should talk to a doctor or nurse about being screened for depression.
  • Diabetes: Men with high blood pressure, or those who take medication for high blood pressure, should get screened for diabetes.
  • Hepatitis C Virus (HCV): Men should get screened for HVC infection if they were born between 1945 and 1965, if they ever injected drugs, or if they received a blood transfusion before 1992.
  • High Blood Cholesterol: Men 35 and older should get their blood cholesterol checked regularly with a blood test. Men who use tobacco, are overweight or obese, have diabetes or high blood pressure, have a history of heart disease or blocked arteries, or have a family member who had a heart attack before age 50 should talk to a doctor or nurse about having cholesterol checked earlier.
  • High Blood Pressure: Men should get their blood pressure checked at least every two years.
