The CORE Wellness focus for May is physical fitness! Shape up for summer with these health and wellness tips.

  • Find an exercise that fits: Exercise that fits individual personalities will help contribute to long-term success. Social butterflies can try group exercise classes, joining a kickball team or walking with a group of friends. For those who prefer time alone, jogging solo or following along with exercise videos at home might be a better fit.
  • Make exercise a lifestyle: Be realistic about physical fitness goals and commitments. If crunched for time, find an activity close to home instead of having to drive to the gym. Not a morning person? Don’t plan on getting up at the crack of dawn for a boot camp class. The key is building activity into daily life so that it is not disruptive.
  • Turn exercise into a habit: It can take a little while for something to become a habit, so take the time to create a regular routine. Exercise around the same time each day, or assign certain activities to certain days.
  • Break up exercise: It’s okay to break up physical activity into smaller segments. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of exercise on most days, but if that sounds overwhelming, try three 10-minute workout sessions each day instead.
  • Keep going: Don’t worry about missing a day or a workout. Everybody struggles once in a while; what’s important is the long-term commitment. Stay motivated and get back on track the next day!
