What is a Plant-Based Diet?

A plant-based lifestyle focuses on eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and beans in your daily meals. Although this diet strives to eat predominately plant-based foods, you can eat a plant-based diet without going completely vegetarian! Consuming more plant foods may help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, help you maintain a healthy weight, and reduce cancer risks.

Popular “diets” that focus on eating more plant-based foods include: Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH), Mediterranean, and Vegetarian.

To plan for plant-based meals, aim to make 2/3 (or more) of your plate vegetables, fruits, whole grains or beans, and 1/3 (or less) animal protein dishes.

Plant-based foods are packed with cancer fighting chemicals and heart healthy minerals. Pairing more plant-based meals along with regular exercise can help you reach your wellness goals.
