ACI Crisis Support: Disaster Planning Tips

October 30, 2012      |      Posted on Posted in Total Well-Being

As Hurricane Sandy descends and many communities along the eastern seaboard are being pummeled by extreme weather, it is important to remember that there are steps that can be taken to minimize both physical damage and anxiety surrounding such an event.

Be prepared in advance – or, if already experiencing the effects of Hurricane Sandy, utilize what resources are available in order to maximize efficiency and save employees or family from injury during the storm.

  1. Decide on critical emergency preparation. Designate an escape route from home or office. Stock up on food, water, and essential supplies.
  2. Set up a “Plan B” for communication with coworkers and loved ones in case the Internet or cell phone towers go down.
  3. Take pictures of equipment, furniture, and valuables for insurance purposes.
  4. Set up an alternate working or living location ahead of time, somewhere accessible and safe and can be reached quickly in case of disaster.
  5. Distribute plans to family members, community members, or employees so that everyone has access to the same emergency information.
  6. Track current storms and emergency information to stay up-to-date, especially when living in a high-danger area. Visit our recent blog post on hurricane tracking.

A little bit of preparation can go a long way to ensure peace of mind and safety during natural disasters. Be sure to follow the direction of local officials in order to stay safe.
