Exercise Safely in the Summer Heat

On hot and humid summer days, stepping outside feels more like walking into the sauna! It is possible to stay active and healthy in warm weather if you follow some of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s recommendations for exercising in the heat:

  •  Limit outdoor activity, especially between 12-4pm when the sun is hottest.
  •  Schedule workouts earlier or later in the day when the temperature is cooler.
  •  Wear and reapply sunscreen as indicate on the package.
  •  Start activities slow and pick up the pace gradually.
  •  Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  •  Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink more. Muscle cramping may be an early sign of heat-related illness.
  •  Monitor a teammate’s condition, and have someone do the same for you.
  •  Seek medical care immediately if you or a teammate has symptoms of heat-related illness (review symptoms here: http://www.cdc.gov/extremeheat/warning.html).
