How Sugar Sneaks Into Your System

Did you know that the average American consumes about 22 teaspoons of sugar per day? Extra sugar often sneaks into the American diet through drinks such as coffee, juice, soda, energy and sports drinks, and alcoholic beverages. Beverages are often the hidden culprit of weight gain, since they are not solid food and can therefore be consumed quickly. However, finding alternatives to sugary drinks can positively impact weight management. Here are a few tips on how to reduce sugar consumption in beverages:

  • Gradually reduce added sugar, creamer and honey in coffee, tea and smoothies
  • Dilute juice with water and gradually increase the water-to-juice ratio
  • Instead of drinking a sugary beverage with every meal, limit consumption to just one meal
  • Try fruit-infused water or fruit juice without added sugar
